Yet Another Hype

Om zomaar wat hypes te noemen:
Web Applications, XML, PDF.

Wanneer blijken Web Applicaties dan weer "not done"?

These days, clients are most often web browsers, although that has not always been the case. Servers typically include web servers, database servers and mail servers.

Web Applications, promise or hype?

Keep it simple

As you see, JavaScript is inherently superior to any other language for writing Web applications because it is already there.

Conservatively estimated, 90% of the Web users have JavaScript installed and ready for use. There is no need to wait for specifications, you can start creating Web applications right away. The strong and weak points of JavaScript are well known, skilled developers are available, browser incompatibilities have been documented.

Why do people nonetheless search for complicated solutions? Why do they ignore the simple one that is right in front of them? Why don't they keep it simple?

Sometimes I feel that JavaScript's availability is its main weakness. A language that already works everywhere, and that doesn't need herds of objects and classes and APIs and stuff, can't be the right tool for a complex programming job. Besides, using something that is already there doesn't earn you karma points in the programming nirvana. Therefore "serious" programmers are forced to ponderously reinvent the wheel time and again.

Unfortunately for them, any attempt to implement Web applications without JavaScript will result in a terrible waste of time and resources. JavaScript is the only possible solution, since it is the only exisiting solution.

PDF Usability Crimes

The usability problems that PDF files cause on websites or intranets are legion:
 • Linear exposition. PDF files are typically converted from documents that were intended for print, so the authors wouldn't have followed the guidelines for Web writing. The result? A long text that takes up many screens and is unpleasant and boring to read.
 • Jarring user experience. PDF lives in its own environment with different commands and menus. Even simple things like printing or saving documents are difficult because standard browser commands don't work.
 • Crashes and software problems. While not as bad as in the past, you're still more likely to crash users' browsers or computers if you serve them a PDF file rather than an HTML page.
 • Breaks flow. You have to wait for the special reader to start before you can see the content. Also, PDF files often take longer time to download because they tend to be stuffed with more fluff than plain Web pages.
 • Orphaned location. Because the PDF file is not a Web page, it doesn't show your standard navigation bars. Typically, users can't even find a simple way to return to your site's homepage.
 • Content blob. Most PDF files are immense content chunks with no internal navigation. They also lack a decent search, aside from the extremely primitive ability to jump to a text string's next literal match. If the user's question is answered on page 75, there's close to zero probability that he or she will locate it.
 • Text fits the printed page, not a computer screen. PDF layouts are often optimized for a sheet of paper, which rarely matches the size of the user's browser window. Bye-bye smooth scrolling. Hello tiny fonts.

Users Hate PDF

In several recent usability studies, users complained woefully whenever they encountered PDF files.

http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exceptioneel_transport

The problem that's introduced here is the impedance between the intention of try/catch exception handling in general (allow exceptional conditions to be handled far from their source) and the implication of checked exceptions in particular (everyone between the thrower and the handler must be aware of the exception that passes through).
Freudiaans nietwaar?
Je verwacht ze bijna deze exceptions.
En jawel zie:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Expection_handling
Expection Handling is a computer programming Anti-pattern. It refers to using a computer language's error handling structures to perform normal program logic, like control flow. The term comes from combining exception handling with the word expect: In other words, expection handling is catching occurrences that you expect to happen.

Maar de Romeinse keizer.

Rare jongens die Romeinen!

http://users.pandora.be/vbz/overzicht.htm
Vb.: IV = 5 - 1 of IX = 10 - 1 = 9.

Handige notatie!

JavaScript kent alleen runtime errors!

http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nero_%28keizer%29
[quotes]

The IBM iSeries Developer Road Map: Is it right for you?

http://search400.techtarget.com/tip/1,289483,sid3_gci933635,00.html
There's a new road map in town: the iSeries Developer Road Map.

It says, "Moving from traditional iSeries programming languages (RPG, COBOL, C) to J2EE is a long jump, but does not require a single leap. This chart describes a road map-discreet, achievable steps that move developers and applications on the path to an excellently implemented Web future."

We celebrate the fact that WebSphere WASN'T in the FIRST sentence. On the other hand, IBM created another version of the road map for COMMON titled "The iSeries Developer Road map at COMMON." This one starts by saying the following:

"WebSphere is IBM's key infrastructure solution which allows developers to build and deliver dynamic e-business solutions quickly. In order to make the transition from "green screen" RPG/COBOL applications to graphical Web-based applications, IBM is introducing the iSeries Developer Road map."

So maybe the new road map IS about selling us WebSphere -- again. Maybe IBM is worried we haven't bought it already.

Actually, most of the road map is built around the development tools: WebSphere Development Studio Client for iSeries (WDSC). Large companies (20 or more developers) may also look at IBM's Rational tool suite for more application design tools as well (not listed in the road map).

As more technologies become available, it becomes increasingly important to update the applications to exploit them and incorporate them into existing solutions.

This is true whether the technology is a Graphical User Interface, a User Interface for a Personal Digital Assistance (PDAs) or the inclusion of components for extending solutions using new Web technologies and whatever the future holds. These expansions into new technologies can help a company change and respond to the needs of the business; in fact, evolving into an on demand business.

Application innovation is an investment journey that takes existing business applications and integrates them with the pervasiveness and open architecture of modern technologies like Service oriented Architecture (SOA). It is the integration with these technologies that allows for almost unlimited possibilities for developing new business value. To help guide System i customers and Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) on this journey, IBM provides the System i Developer Road Atlas; a set of discrete, achievable steps that accelerates the skills of your developers and extends the capabilities of your applications, helping you generate new revenue and save money; while mitigating risk.

The System i Developer Road Atlas illustrates all the possibilities for development activities; including modernization, new development and the inclusion of components which have already been created. The Road Atlas shows key activities required for developers from seemingly diverse backgrounds as RPG, Java and PHP to integrate components together creating on demand applications.

Your application strategy can be enabled by following the steps outlined in the System i Developer Road Atlas. This initiative includes products and tools available from IBM and from the System i Tools Innovation Program.

Six o'clock - TV hour. Don't get caught in foreign tower. Slash and burn,
return, listen to yourself churn. Lock him in uniform and book burning,
blood letting. Every motive escalate. Automotive incinerate. Light a candle,
light a motive. Step down, step down. Watch a heel crush, crush. Uh oh,
this means no fear - cavalier. Renegade and steer clear! A tournament,
a tournament, a tournament of lies. Offer me solutions, offer me alternatives
and I decline.

It's the end of the world as we know it.
It's the end of the world as we know it.
It's the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine.

The other night I tripped a nice continental drift divide. Mount St. Edelite.

It's the end of the world as we know it.

Die Computable toch!

http://www.computable.nl/artikel.jsp?rubriek=1458048&id=2461996

Wacht even:

http://www.essent.nl/content/overessent/essentcorporate/locaties/clauscentrale.jsp

Even Googlen en jawel:

IBM's Got A Big, Bad Computer

Leander Kahney Email 06.29.00 | 3:00 AM

Last Friday a large convoy of trucks left an IBM manufacturing plant in upstate New York and headed across the country to a federal weapons lab in Northern California.

The 28 semi-trucks were loaded with the first batch of components for the world's largest supercomputer, a monster machine the size of two basketball courts that draws enough electricity to power a small town.

Description

ASCI White was a supercomputer at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California.

It was a computer cluster based on IBM's commercial RS/6000 SP computer. 512 of these machines were connected together for ASCI White, with 16 375MHz Power3 processors per node and 8,192 processors in total with 6 terabytes of memory and 160 terabytes of disk storage. The computer weighed 106 tons and consumed 3 MW of electricity with a further 3 MW needed for cooling. It had a theoretical processing speed of 12.3 Tflops. The system ran IBM's AIX operating system.

ASCI White was made up of three individual systems, the 512 node White, the 28 node Ice and the 68 node Frost.

The system was built in Poughkeepsie, New York. Completed in June 2000 it was transported to specially built facilities in California and officially dedicated on August 15, 2001. The system cost $110 million.

It was built as stage three of the Accelerated Strategic Computing Initiative (ASCI) started by the U.S. Department of Energy and the National Nuclear Security Administration to build a simulator to replace live Weapons of Mass Destruction testing following the moratorium on testing started in 1992.

The machine was decommissioned beginning July 27, 2006.

200 werkbare dagen * 3 uur/dag = 600 uur betekent 600/8 =75 werkdagen.

Over humor gesproken:

Quote:

wegwezen dus: miep miep ...

Will be fooled again

Je leest het goed, het is niet:
Won't get fooled again (The Who)

Ja, en de roadrunner will
Never be clever (Herman Brood)

We will never learn!
En verklaar gerust Nostradamus maar voor gek.

En boeken als 1984, Brave New World, Fahrenheit 451

Clean Desk, Sick Mind?

See for example this URL:

I'am clean and mean, and no I do not have something to hide!

And look at this metaphor, Stanley en Linvingstone meeting each others in the midst of this IT jungle:

As the IT landscape is much of a jungle, I'll keep my desk clean, aiming for the paperless office ...

The R-word

R staat voor het forbidden word Recession.
Vandaag hoorde de roadrunner op de radio:
het securitiseren van kredieten.
Mijn hemel, wat is dat nu weer?
Even aan het kennisnet vragen en ja:
http://www.dnb.nl/dnb/home?xsl=/stylesheets/publication/DNBzoekresultaten.xsl&searchtext-main=securitisatie&xsl=/stylesheets/publication/DNBzoekresultaten.xsl&page=4

Quote:

The (f)lying dutchman

Zie: http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=lying+dutchman
Of: http://www.neosurrealismart.com/3d-artist-gallery/3d-artworks/31surreal-gallery-Phantom.htm

En wat achtergrond informatie:
http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/De_Vliegende_Hollander_(spookschip)
