The IBM iSeries Developer Road Map: Is it right for you?

De kijk van Van Eijk: De bende van Gideon

Veel it-organisaties presteren nog niet zo best. De dienstverlening schiet tekort, is traag, en loopt achter bij wat de afnemers willen. Vaak probeert men dit te verbeteren door meer regels en procedures in te voeren. Als dat niet werkt gaat men deze regels bovendien steeds strakker handhaven. De bureaucratie neemt toe! Helpt dat? Helaas niet vaak genoeg. Hoe moet het dan wel? Een alternatief hiervoor is Gideon's bende.

Een alternatief voor de bureaucratie binnen een it-organisatie is wat ik de Gideon's bende noem. Dat is een kleine groep van hoog gemotiveerde en gekwalificeerde mensen die aan een half woord genoeg hebben. Mensen die van de hoed en de rand weten, en respect verdienen door hun kennis van zaken.

Zo'n groep wordt ook wel eens aangeduid als het 'dream team', en dat is precies wat het is, een droom. Tuurlijk, ze bestaan, ik heb ze in werking gezien. Ik heb beheerclubs gezien die met een handjevol mensen infrastructuren in stand hielden waar andere organisaties een veelvoud aan mensen voor nodig hadden.

Er is maar één nadeel. Het schaalt niet op. Als de te beheren omgeving verder en verder doorgroeit, komt op een dag het moment dat men het niet meer trekt. Dan moeten er mensen bij, en die mensen zijn niet altijd uit hetzelfde hout gesneden. De groep wordt te groot voor de manier van communiceren die men gewend was.

De nieuwe mensen hebben nog niet geleerd hoe het werkt, de oude hap herkent zich er niet meer in en gaat weg. De hele manier van werken van zo'n groep kan dan spectaculair snel in elkaar donderen. Dan zijn de rapen gaar, en blijkt de aanwezigheid van veel goede wil niet meer genoeg te zijn voor succes.

Ook de bende van Gideon is dus niet het zalig makende antwoord op slecht presterende it-organisaties. Wat we er wel van kunnen leren is het belang van kennis van zaken. Als een bureaucratie niet werkt is dat vaak omdat men er taken van verwacht die men onvoldoende begrijpt. In zo'n geval is de bureaucratie vooral effectief in het frustreren van resultaat.

IBM verwarmt zwembad met datacentrum

Een nieuw datacentrum van IBM, dat binnenkort in het Zwitserse Zürich verrijst, gaat zijn overtollige warmte inzetten voor de verwarming van een openbaar zwembad.

IBM gaat met een nieuw datacentrum in een voormalige militaire bunker een openbaar zwembad verwarmen. Het is de eerste keer dat IBM een datacentrum inzet voor milieuvriendelijke verwarming.

Het project in Zurich valt onder Project Big Green van IBM. Dit initiatief omvat energiezuinige IBM-producten en diensten. Daarnaast helpt IBM de energie terug te brengen bij Datacentra. Met een simpel plan van 5 stappen kan tot 42 procent aan energie worden bespaard.

Verwacht wordt dat het datacentrum bij volledige capaciteit, 2.800 megawatt aan warmte levert, wat in andere gevallen niet zou worden gebruikt. Die energie is genoeg om tachtig huishoudens te voorzien van verwarming en warm water.

IBM leverde het datacentrum voor het Zwitserse ict-bedrijf GIB-Services. Verwacht wordt dat het project over een paar maanden zorgt voor een comfortabele temperatuur van het zwemwater.

Het is theoretisch mogelijk om tot 90 procent van de elektriciteit van het datacentrum te hergebruiken. Hiermee wordt 130 ton CO₂ bespaard, gelijk aan de uitstoot van een auto die meer dan 800.000 kilometer rijdt.

Wacht even:
2.800 megawatt om 80 huishoudens te voorzien van verwarming en warm water.
Tja, er staat natuurlijk niet bij in hoeveel jaar.
Maar enig rekenwerk toont aan dat er hier iets niet kan kloppen!

IBM staat dus voor Intense Broei Machines.
De Essent moet oppassen voor deze oneerlijke concurrentie.
Immers zo'n computer kan behalve heet worden, nog rekenen.
Dat kan die Claus duidelijk niet.

Last Friday a large convoy of trucks left an IBM manufacturing plant in upstate New York and headed across the country to a federal weapons lab in Northern California.

The 28 semi-trucks were loaded with the first batch of components for the world's largest supercomputer, a monster machine the size of two basketball courts that draws enough electricity to power a small town.

Description

ASCI White was a supercomputer at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California.

It was a computer cluster based on IBM's commercial RS/6000 SP computer. 512 of these machines were connected together for ASCI White, with 16 375MHz Power3 processors per node and 8,192 processors in total with 6 terabytes of memory and 160 terabytes of disk storage. The computer weighed 106 tons and consumed 3 MW of electricity with a further 3 MW needed for cooling. It had a theoretical processing speed of 12.3 Tflops. The system ran IBM's AIX operating system.

ASCI White was made up of three individual systems, the 512 node White, the 28 node Ice and the 68 node Frost.

The system was built in Poughkeepsie, New York. Completed in June 2000 it was transported to specially built facilities in California and officially dedicated on August 15, 2001. The system cost $110 million.

It was built as stage three of the Accelerated Strategic Computing Initiative (ASCI) started by the U.S. Department of Energy and the National Nuclear Security Administration to build a simulator to replace live Weapons of Mass Destruction testing following the moratorium on testing started in 1992.

The machine was decommissioned beginning July 27, 2006.
