Eclipse rocks!
Eclipse rocks ... even for Microsoft.

Microsoft took another baby step into the world of open source recently as it announced the first fruits of two separate initiatives to improve Eclipse development on Windows 7. Also covered are Microsoft platforms including Azure and Silverlight.
"For Microsoft, it is another step in their clear trend in being more open and embracing other developer communities," said Mike Milinkovich, CEO of the Eclipse Foundation. "As a developer platform, Eclipse competes with Visual Studio, but they are recognizing that they need to reach out and make sure there are tools that work for their platforms, even if those don't come from Microsoft," he continued.
Milinkovich said roughly three-quarters of the Eclipse downloads are for the Windows platform. There are roughly 1 million downloads of Eclipse per month, and various market estimates place the total number of Eclipse developers at between 4 and 6.5 million.
So what's wrong with Microsofts Visual Studio?

Jumpstart your next project with Visual Studio 2010 Beta 2. The "Go Live" license with this release means you can develop and deploy before the finished product hits the shelf.
Maybe, because it's a beta and Eclipse isn't ...
And how many diferent jumpstarts can a man make in his life?
The roadrunner is back as never before! See also: My homepage or my very obsolete site

Hi Jos,
I have been working with VS2008 and I must say it is not as bad. I quite like it actually. There is a lot of stuff open source under umbrella of Microsoft (codeplex is one of the places). I was sceptical at first, but there's a lot of good stuff they have made for development. Whether it's all good, is debatable. One mustn't forget that Eclipse has had lots of versions, milestone releases, release candidates, and sadly, it is growing, and I should not like to call it bloated, but sometimes I have such an impression. The good thing, however, is the choice and the competition that stimulates the progress (or just kills it in some instances).
Anyway, I hope you're doing fine.
All the best,
Dariusz
